Nonlinear guided waves and spatial solitons in a periodic layered medium

چکیده
We present an overview of the properties of nonlinear guided waves and (bright and dark) spatial optical solitons in a periodic medium created by linear and nonlinear waveguides. First we consider a single layer with a cubic nonlinear response (a nonlinear slab waveguide) embedded in a periodic layered linear medium and describe nonlinear localized modes (guided waves and Bragg-like localized gap modes) and their stability. Then we study modulational instability as well as the existence and stability of discrete spatial solitons in a periodic array of identical nonlinear layers, a one-dimensional model of nonlinear photonic crystals. We emphasize both similarities to and differences from the models described by the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation, which is derived in the tight-binding approximation, and the coupled-mode theory, which is valid for shallow periodic modulations. © 2002 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: 190.5940, 130.2790.

Bright spatial solitons in non-Kerr media: stationary beams and dynamical evolution
We give a comprehensive summary of the results on self-guided beams, bright spatial solitary waves, emphasizing the most recent advances. To be stable in a bulk medium, such beams should propagate in a non-Kerr medium. It is emphasized that all spatial solitons are generically the same, independent of the type of nonlinear medium, and such free-propagating beams can execute interesting dynamics...

The problem of modulation instability of a self-focused beam in a homogeneous nonlinear medium with saturation and anomalous group-velocity dispersion is solved numerically. It is shown that the results of this instability is beam breakup into a periodic train of three-dimensional (3D) spatial solitary waves. It is also shown that other types of periodic initial conditions can produce a periodi...

متن کاملIncoherent multi-gap optical solitons in nonlinear photonic lattices.
We demonstrate numerically that partially incoherent light can be trapped in the spectral band gaps of a photonic lattice, creating partially incoherent multi-component spatial optical solitons in a self-defocusing nonlinear periodic medium. We find numerically such incoherent multi-gap optical solitons and discuss how to generate them in experiment by interfering incoherent light beams at the ...
